Explaining Chiropractic

Has anyone ever asked you to explain chiropractic? Have you been in a situation where you are explaining chiropractic to someone but it seems like you are going in circles? Have you ever wished there was an easy way to explain chiropractic to a non-chiropractor and have it make sense and have impact?

I have a challenge for you; explain chiropractic in the following manner. There is only one no-no when using this explanation. You may not use the words Health, Wellness or discuss any kind of Symptom. There you have it. Here goes. Try this explanation.

Before you begin explaining chiropractic you need to find out a few things from the person you are talking to. Find out what they do, what are their interests, their hobbies, do they have a family, find out what drives them. Then speak to them in terms of performance and function. Then as you are talking about how subluxation lowers performance and function tie it in with these topics.

For example let’s say this person loves to fish. You explain that if they are subluxated they have nerve interference which can cause foggy thinking, your metabolism can slow down, you are not as sharp, hand eye coordination isn’t quite as good as it could be. How they will have diminished ability to feel in the fingers on the line the difference between a fish, weeds or rocks, ever so slight as it may be. They are not performing optimally with subluxation present.

You can use hand eye coordination for lots of brain-body activities. How about when you come home from work and you get to spend some quality time with your family. Do you want to be subluxated or not? Be creative. Show how having a nerve system working less than perfect negatively impacts their daily activities. Then of course explain how much better life can be having a properly functioning nerve system. Integrate these facts into the body of the following explanation.

So you want to know what chiropractic is all about. You have a brain located within your skull which extends through a large opening in the base of the skull traveling down through your backbone which is called your spinal cord. This spinal cord has 32 pair of nerves that branch off and pass between the vertebrae of your spine. These nerves travel to all parts of the body. As a matter of fact if you were to strip away everything from your body except for the nerve system we would still be able to recognize each other. You would see the curves of the body, the wrinkles in your skin as well as your tongue, eyelids, finger nails, fingers and toes. You have a lot of nerves in your body.

Do you understand what the nerve system is? Could you explain to me what its function is? (Here you wait for their answer and you gauge how well they understand neurophysiology. You then reinforce their answer or expound upon it so they understand: It is the brain and nerve system that controls, coordinates and runs the body. Once they grasp this concept you continue.)

Given the brain and nerve system runs all parts of the body it is important there is no interference of this brain-body communication system. The most common interference to the nerve system comes from subluxation. Subluxation is a minor misalignment of the bones of the spine which can sometimes pinch nerves but more commonly subluxation interferes with nerve transmissions from the brain to the body and back to the brain again. When there is interference between your brain and body, your performance suffers. Your body is unable to function as well as it could without nerve interference.

Chiropractors help insure an individual lives their life as free from nerve interference as possible. Chiropractors detect and correct vertebral subluxations. By doing this we are removing interference from your nerve system helping to insure that your brain is able to communicate with all parts of the body resulting in improved function and performance on every level.

Throughout your life you continue to do things that can and will cause you to subluxate. The majority of the time your body corrects these subluxations all by itself. However, sometimes the subluxations are not able to be self corrected by the body and that’s where the chiropractor comes into play. If you want your body to perform and function to the best of its ability and make the best use of all the good things you do for your body, as much as possible you must keep your nerve system functioning free from interference.

This is why you need to see your chiropractor regularly throughout a lifetime. Everyone can benefit from living life free from nerve interference. Not only should you get checked regularly but so should your spouse your brothers &, sisters, your kids, your parents, your friends…you get the idea.

I wouldn’t have you do anything I wouldn’t and I get checked for subluxation every week. Let’s say we start getting you and your family checked out.

There you have it. You have just explained the essence of chiropractic and we never discussed symptoms, health or wellness. We just explained that your life will be better off when you live life free from nerve interference caused by subluxation.

Inevitably a person will then ask you well that all sounds great but what about my (and they name a condition). They ask you about their symptoms.

Your answer is: “When we remove nerve interference your body will function and perform better on every level, good things happen. This may or may not help your condition; however lots of people have been helped with many different conditions once getting under chiropractic care. Knowing what you now know that makes sense doesn’t it? Whether or not this will help, is yet to be determined. First we need to see if you are subluxated and then correct them and see what happens. Let’s see what happens to you?”

Give this a try the next time you are explaining chiropractic to someone. You will find out it is very easy to do and quite effective.

I was just wondering the other day what chiropractors in Salem OR actually do? I know that they help with back injuries and tenseness, but I had no idea what their job description entailed. I'm no expert on the subject (obviously), but you seem to have done a really good job here describing more about it. I definitely agree that it helps to explain something when you have some sort of common ground.

Nerve interference is often spoken about but seldom do we hear about "chi" interference, or the interruption of ener "chi" through out the body. It is a bit more of an Eastern Philosophy that through modalities such as chiropractic, when nerve flow opens, so the chi or "life force". There are certain metals such as titanium and germanium which when placed on the body (in the form of jewelry, etc.) have shown to improve the natural flow of energy and can have remarkable results. A good example of this is found at www.eforceplus.com where there are actual videos showing this occurrence.

Forgot to mention that the increased energy flow, whether through chiropractic or the utilization of certain minerals worn on the body, can be seen using Kirlian photography as seen at http://www.eforceplus.com

Maybe I don't understand fully what Chiropractic is, I thought it was self-explanatory. The reason being is it feels like heaven, especially if it follows an hour and a half massage. My buddy's dad is a Chiropractor and I would always try to get him to hook me up with free massages.

You explained subluxations so well. I wasn't really sure when a chiropractor would come into play, but it completely makes sense that your body can't always fix the subluxations by itself. Thanks for the information. I'll have to find a chiropractor and set up an appointment.

I have gained a lot of weight over the last few years and it is finally having an effect on my lower back. I have to see a chiropractor every few weeks and instructs me on different stretches which for me are very difficult. I wish this could all be easier.

From the way you describe it, chiropractic care is an art. My back has been giving me some trouble lately, and I am looking for a chiropractor. I would like to get some recommendations, but my neighbors and friends have never been.

Are there statistics on the effectiveness of these procedures? My grandma had some chiropractic work done a few years ago and it worked for her. I am interested to see if it is the same for most people. http://www.spinalrehabclinic.com

Did you ever go to a chiropractor, Jerry? I am also having back trouble and have never been treated. If you found some that you like, I would love a referral. I can't wait to get some relief.

Thank you for this very informative post. Although it is aimed at chiropractors to help them explain what they do to non-chiropractors, it is also easy enough for non-chiropractors to understand. The explanation about nerves really clarified the chiropractor's role in a patient's health.

I have a friend who is studying to be a chiropractor. He is in his last year of school! He is currently working at a chiropractic office and sometimes helps the licensed chiropractors. From what he has said, they use more equipment and software than he had expected. I wonder where they get their software.

I love your statement about getting to know what a person does for a living, as well as their hobbies, before explaining what the word 'chiropractic' means. This shows empathy for the person you're talking to. This also helps because you're getting to know your audience and how they understand and perceive things. Thank you so much for an interesting and useful article, which I won't soon forget.

I agree that chiropractic is very hard to explain. My uncle is a chiropractor and he explains it well. However, if you ask anyone else it is very hard to explain. I would agree that in order to explain chiropractic you should relate it to something that the listener knows about.

I have actually really learned a lot about chiropractors lately. I think it is really interesting how they can realign your body so you don't have any nerve issues. I think it would help to go in and get checked out if you are having nerve issues or frequent headaches. It would really help you stay clear of pain and will also improve your mobility.

I don't think that enough people understand chiropractic services. I have friends and family members who have had some pretty incredible experiences with chiropractic work. I know that it can work pretty easily if you go to somebody that is good. I've actually been having some serious back problems lately. I think that going to a chiropractor would help me quite a bit.

I know a lot of people ar skeptics about chiropractics, but I really don't know why. Chiropractic adjustments really can help to align your body and correct a lot of things. I wonder if people assume it is like a placebo effect? I have met some people that treat it like witchcraft, which I do not understand.

I have been having problems with my back for a few weeks now. I have been to a doctor who recommended that I visit a chiropractor. I have made an appointment with the chiropractor for next week. Hopefully the chiropractor will be able to fix whatever is wrong with my back. I have heard some very good things about chiropractors and I have complete faith that he will fix me.

My mother has been having troubles with her neck and she is not sure what is causing the pain. She doesn't think that the pain is coming from sleep or her pillow. I have recommended that she go see a chiropractor and have him take a look and try to help. If anything, the chiropractor will probably straighten her back and maybe make her neck temporarily feel better.
